Frequently Asked Questions
1. What does hand-poured mean?
All Evan & Earth candles are made by hand, at home. Each one is poured lovingly and individually, not by a machine. Small variations may appear in surface texture. This does not affect performance.
2. Are soy candles safe to use on all skin types?
Soy beans are entirely natural, as are the fruit and nut oils blended in to achieve the silky texture of the melted wax. All fragrances are tested to be body-safe but if you have particularly sensitive skin, an unscented candle is available.
3. Can I try this with any candle?
NO! Do not dip into any candle other than those from Evan & Earth unless the directions specifically say to do so.
4. Doesn't it burn your skin?
Not at all! Soy melts at a very low temperature and won't get very hot. However, do not allow children to see you using the warm melted oil because they may try this unsupervised. Always take extreme caution to avoid contact with the flame.
When you blow out the flame and the wax has firmed up again, trim the wick to 1/4". This will keep the flame from getting too tall and keep any black flakes out of the wax. Also re-cap the jar to keep dust and crumbs out. Push the top down firmly until you hear a little pop. The top will spin freely but does not unscrew. Pull straight up to remove.
5. What if I can't light a candle where I live or at work?
You can still enjoy it several ways. Because soy melts so easily, you can use your finger to take some of the firm wax out of the jar. Warm it between your fingers or in your palm and then rub it in to your skin. The effects are the same. You can also use an electric candle warmer, or just leave the candle top off and enjoy the fragrance without heating it.
6. How do I grow flowers from the seed-embedded paper label?
The paper can be planted
directly into the soil or in a pot...or the candle jar! Tear the paper
into smaller pieces and plant not more than 1/8" deep. Spread the torn
pieces apart to give them room to bloom! Firm down the dirt after
sowing. The seeds should be kept moist for 4-6 weeks and receive 4
hours of sunlight each day to germinate properly. You may see English
Daisies, Roman Chamomile, Monkey flower, Red Corn Poppy and more. Send
us photos of your new wildflower garden!
7. Are all of your materials earth-friendly?
Whenever possible, we use recycled, recyclable or renewable resources to create our products and it will be indicated on the product. Examples include: 100% recycled fiber tissue paper and shredded paper in the boxes and bags, recycled paper shopping boxes and bags, business cards printed on recycled paper, lead-free cotton wicks and unbleached 100% cotton biodegradable ribbon. Using soy beans for wax instead of paraffin is also an earth-friendly choice because soy beans are USA-grown and a renewable resource. They have a very clean burn (you will notice this as soon as you begin to burn one) and don't leave any black residue on your ceiling or in the jar. Speaking of the jar, it was chosen specifically for it's re-usability. Wash it out with hot water and soap (that's it!) and give it a new life. Once it gets to you, please do your part by keeping the containers out of landfills.
8. Is satisfaction guaranteed?
Absolutely! If you are not as thrilled as we are about using soy candles and body scrubs from Evan & Earth, please contact us immediately for refund or replacement.
9. Where can I buy Evan & Earth products?
There is limited supply left in 11 retail stores. Check the "Locations" tab and call before you visit to see if there is any left.
10. What happened to "Keri's HomeWork"?
Keri's HomeWork was the original Evan & Earth, started in 2007 in Georgia. All products have been redesigned and re-introduced under the name Evan & Earth. Thank you to those who supported us as Keri's HomeWork. We hope you will enjoy us once again with our new identity.
11. Why don't you use essential oils?
Simple answer: the amount that you would need to scent a candle of this size would be expensive, therefore raising the cost of the candle. In order to stay at a reasonable price point, we use body-safe fragrance oils, similar to what you are probably using in other bath & body products such as perfumes and shampoo. Using only essential oils also limits the scent possibilities and we like a little more flexibility than that. :) However, we are considering adding a separate, smaller line of essential oil candles.
12. I would like to carry your products in my store. Can I?
No, not right now. We are on semi-permanent vacation. But thank you for asking.
